This is the only bridge saved from the German mines during the World War II. In the 1400s the shops on the bridge were butchers shops, which would drop the offal and rubbish directly into the river below. In 1593, in order to clean up the noisy and smelly street, the Garden Duke Fernardo I decided to install jewelers, goldsmiths and silversmiths. Along with Michelangelo’s David, it is a symbol of the city. A bridge that has endured throught the years, the Ponte Vecchio ( The Old Bridge).
