The history relating to the founding of Siena is today for the most part obscure. It was almost certainly an Etruscan city and then Roman, as one can gather from its symbols: the female wolf that nurses the twins Romulus and Remus and the black and white blaze. According to the legend of Siena the founding fathers of Siena were Senio e Ascanio, the sons of Remus, who, having escaped from their uncle Romulus, constructed the Castle Senio. When escaping, the brothers took with them the statue of the temple of apollo in Rome. On founding the castle at Siena they decided the colors for their standard black for Ascanio , white for Senio.

This is the only bridge saved from the German mines during the World War II. In the 1400s the shops on the bridge were butchers shops, which would drop the offal and rubbish directly into the river below. In 1593, in order to clean up the noisy and smelly street, the Garden Duke Fernardo I decided to install jewelers, goldsmiths and silversmiths. Collannata is a village close to Carrara ( Tuscany ) and boasts a great gastronomic treat, the lardo di maiale ( pork fat). I know it may sound a little fattening ( and abviously it is) , but for the more “gastronomically adventurous” it’s definitely worth a try. The Lardo di maiale is prepared in a very particular way. Once the fat has been removed from the pig, it is placed inside a marble basin with salt, garlic, spices and rosemery and it sits for a period of time while the flavours mingle together. The Lardo di Colonnata has very delicate taste and is best enjoyed on a slice of warm focaccia ( flat bread with oil and salat). During your holiday in Tuscany it’s possible to visit Colonnata. Distance: 85 km from Florence, 20 km from Forte dei Marmi, 25 km from Viareggio, 20 from Carrara, 50 km from Lucca.
